Cat and Kitten Rescue of Chandlers Ford

A small independent rescue service homing cats and kittens in the environs of Chandlers Ford, Hampshire.

Helen Farrar set up the charity in 1992. Helen works tirelessly and has a regular group of helpers. There are lots of jobs to do, from helping with the cats, to fostering, sorting and pricing the many donations of bric a brac, publicising the group, finding homes, and lastly manning the stall at various events throughout the year.

We are a small independent rescue service and have homed some 2000 cats and kittens since we formed in May 1992. We are based in Chandlers Ford where we have a site with high quality pens and now Winchester, however whenever possible we encourage owners who must give up their cats to keep them at their own home until a new owner is found, as this is best for the cat. There are always more cats needing help than we have space available, even though we also have a team of volunteers who will foster cats and kittens until permanent homes are found.

Although the web is world-wide, we only home cats to homes within a short radius of our base in Chandlers Ford or Winchester, Hampshire! There are a number of reasons for this; it makes it easier for us to do home visits if necessary and provide backup and advice if a cat is experiencing difficulties adjusting to a new owner. There are many rescue groups, both nation-wide and local, and your local vet will be able to give you details of a similar organization in your locality.

To finance this work, we hold numerous fund-raising events; a stall in Winchester at St Maurice's Covert several times a year, stalls at fetes and shows in the summer, and food collections at local supermarkets. Any one who can help in any way - as a volunteer carer, fundraiser, or by donating catfood or goods (bric a brac, toys and books in particular) will be most welcome.

Re-homing

Cats and kittens are only re-homed to suitable homes. We do not home fit, healthy cats into flats above ground floor without safe access to a garden. However, there are occasions when a home where the cat has to be kept indoors, such as when it is elderly, and a flat is often suitable then.

Neutering and vaccinations

Any cat homed by us over the age of six months is already neutered. Neutering all cats is vital, and we, like all other animal groups, will only home kittens where they will be neutered at six months of age. Vaccinations are also very important and we very much encourage owners to have these carried out.

Help can be in the form of donations - cat food and quality bric a brac is always appreciated as is a gift of money. Although we make no charge for adult cats, a monetary gift to cover some of our expenses is very welcome.

Putting your friends in touch with us to help us find homes more often is a great help too.

If you can spare time to help at one of our bric a brac sales you would be very welcome. It can be tiring, but we always have a good time doing it!
