Wartime Project - Chandler’s Ford Section.
In order to preserve the memory of those who lived in the area during the Second World War the Society is collecting information about the people who lived in each of the around 1,500 houses in Chandler’s Ford at that time. Names, dates of birth, why they came to Chandler’s Ford, what they did (especially for the war effort), their careers, hobbies and achievements, marriages, obituaries, related families, photographs of individuals or places, reminiscences and memories.
Material is not restricted to the war-time period but to qualify for inclusion their home address must have been in the Borough of Eastleigh which included Chandler’s Ford and Bishopstoke 1939-1945. We have boring lists of houses and rate-payers in order to check.
So far we have something about just over 200 dwellings in Chandler’s Ford - around 14% of the total. We rely on information we are given (photographs will be scanned and returned).
The results are already too big to be put in a book, but the material will be made available in the Libraries and Museum when the sources dry up - which will not be in the near future.
In the absence of a Census in the year 1941 this could become a useful historical resource.
Please pass on your knowledge while you still can.
