Fire Truck at Popham AirfieldThe airfield is located at Coxford Down near Winchester in Hampshire just off the A303. It is privately owned by Charles Church Spitfires Ltd and was created nearly thirty years ago but was bought by the late Charles Church in 1988.

The main grass runway (08/26) is about 900m long. The other grass runway (03/21) is about 850m in length but can only be used for 28 days each year.

Popham airfield is home to the Spitfire Flying Club with a healthy 500 members. It has a very relaxed atmosphere and is one of the busiest GA airfields in the country with all types of aircraft flying in for a visit. The clubroom, where you can get a bite to eat or a drink includes the radio operator, no control tower at Popham.

This delightful place is alive with aircraft and pilots on a good weekend and it also has events for motorcyclists and a camp site nearby. (That will be the day when caravans fly, having said that an aeronautical engineer designed my caravan, an Eriba!)

With lots of events taking place throughout the year, some of them are free while others have a small charge for entry.

The airfield is unlicensed, so is only used for training by the microlight club, Airbourne Aviation that has been around since 1980. They use Ikarus C42 and Eurostar EV97. There is also a company called ‘Special Flight’ providing aerobatic displays and training for the more advanced pilot.

So if you want to see many different types of light aircraft pop along to Popham. See also the Events section for details of whats on at Popham.
