Basketry is one of the oldest crafts known to man, as it would appear to go back many thousands of years. Examples of this craft have been found at Glastonbury dating back to the 2nd century. This craft is completely carried out by hand and requires only a few simple tools but a large amount of knowledge and skill from the craftsman.

In the distant past the usual daily routine was for people to get up at dawn and to go to bed when it got dark.

The Romans developed a patten of signals at three hourly intervals which later were used by monasteries to divide up the various parts of their day such as Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None and Vespers. This led to the first primitive mechanical clock device known as the Clepsydrae or a water clock. Water dripping through a hole would operate a series of wheels that rang a bell. They were not known for their accuracy.
